Reborn as a Level 1 Nobody in a Level 100 World

The Devourer's Fang carved through the last shadow-wraith, and the blue light of its death bled into the air.

Vex stood alone now. The throne room was littered with husks — puppets drained, shadows gone, his power reduced to a flickering haze around his shoulders. His level tag still read **97**, but he looked smaller. Frailer. Hungrier.

"You don't understand what you've done," Vex said, and his voice had lost its silk. "Those puppets were my anchor. My *control*. I kept them alive — half-alive — for years, and you just... you just *drank them all*."

"Good," Leo said.

"You've killed them! All of them! The champions, the heroes, the people I collected—"

"They were already dead," Leo said quietly. "You just hadn't stopped moving them."

Vex's face twisted. "And what about you? You're worse than me now. You ate them too. You ate *everything*. Look at yourself — you're still glowing!"

Leo looked down. Blue light pulsed under his skin, veins of stolen power racing through his arms. The Devourer System was silent, strained, at its absolute limit.

**【Devourer saturation: 100%.】**
**【WARNING: Overflow imminent. Recommend immediate rest.】**

"You're right," Leo admitted. "I'm not better than you. I'm the same hunger you are."

"Then why—"

"Because I choose what I eat." Leo raised the sword. "And I don't eat people."

Vex laughed — a broken, desperate sound. "Oh, you will. Give it a year. Give it a month. The hunger always wins. It won in me, and I was exactly what you are now." He spread his arms, shadows gathering weakly around him. "So go ahead. Kill me. Take my levels. Become the next Puppet Lord. It's the only ending a Devourer gets."

Leo stepped forward.

"No," he said. "I'm going to give you something better than death."

"What?"

"A fight you can't win."

Leo swung.

Vex raised his shadow shield — but it was a shadow of a shadow now, thin and tattered. The Devourer's Fang sheared through it like paper and struck Vex across the chest.

**【Critical Hit!】**
**【Vex — Level 97 — HP: 82%.】**

Vex staggered, shock on his face. "You... you cut me. You actually cut me!"

"You're not so scary without your army," Leo said, and struck again.

The fight was ugly. Vex threw everything he had — shadow spears, draining curses, desperate grabs for Leo's life-force. But his power was gutted. His puppets were gone. His anchor was ash. And Leo, burning with a hundred stolen levels' worth of fuel, would not stop coming.

**【Vex — HP: 64%.】**
**【Vex — HP: 45%.】**
**【Vex — HP: 27%.】**

"Please," Vex whispered, blood at his lips. "Please, I was like you. I was a Level 1 nobody. I just wanted to matter."

Leo paused.

For one moment, he saw it — a reflection. A man who had started where Leo started, hungry and scared and desperate. A man who had chosen to eat people instead of monsters. A man who had climbed to the top of a mountain made of stolen lives and found nothing at the summit but more hunger.

"Then you should have stopped," Leo said. "Like I'm going to."

He drove the Devourer's Fang through Vex's heart.

**【You have killed Vex, the Puppet Lord (Lv. 97). Boss-class mob.】**
**【Residual experience: ENORMOUS. Devour? Yes / No.**】

Leo stood over the body, sword dripping, blue light swirling around the corpse like a storm.

**【Devour? Yes / No.**】

He looked at Vex's face. Empty now. Peaceful, almost. The hunger that had driven him for years was gone, and in death he looked like what he had been at the start: just a player. Just a nobody.

"No," Leo said. "I don't eat people."

**【Declined. Vex's residual experience disperses into the world.**】

The blue light rose like mist, swirled once around the throne room, and faded through the windows into the night sky.

Leo watched it go.

Then he sheathed the sword, walked to the door, and found Maya standing at the top of the stairs — filthy, bruised, but very much alive. Her eyes were wide.

"You killed him," she said. "A Level 97. You killed him."

"I had help." Leo's legs gave out, and Maya caught him before he hit the floor.

"You're burning up," she said, pressing a hand to his forehead. "You're like a furnace. Leo, you need to rest. You need—"

**【Devourer saturation: 100%.】
【Warning: Overflow imminent. Body entering forced cooldown.**】

"Rest," Leo agreed, his eyes already closing. "Yeah. Rest sounds—"

He blacked out.

---

He woke in a bed.

A real bed, with sheets that smelled like lavender and a window that looked out over Iron Gate Town. The city was still. Quiet. But different — the smoke was gone, and the streets below were filling with people who moved like people, not puppets.

"You're alive."

Leo turned his head. Maya sat in a chair by the window, knife in hand, watching him with an expression he couldn't quite read.

"How long?" he asked.

"Three days. You nearly cooked yourself from the inside." She tossed him a waterskin. "You're lucky Harlow knows more about Devourers than he lets on. He fed you some kind of tonic that stopped you from burning out."

"Where's Harlow?"

"In the forge, rebuilding. Says the city needs a proper smith again." Maya smiled — a real smile this time. "The puppets are waking up, Leo. All over the city. People who've been walking around empty for years are blinking and asking where they are. You didn't just kill Vex. You gave a hundred thousand people their lives back."

Leo sat up slowly. His body ached, but the blue fire was gone, banked to a warm ember somewhere deep in his chest.

**【Status】**
**Name: Leo**
**Class: Farmer (Hidden: Devourer)**
**Level: 31**
**XP to next: 220/4,500**
**Skills: Taste of Power (Lv.2), Alpha's Roar (Lv.1)**

"Level 31," he murmured. "From Level 1 to 31 in... how long?"

"Two weeks," Maya said. "I've never seen anything like it."

"Neither have I." Leo swung his legs out of bed and stood. His body held. "I need to get stronger."

Maya raised an eyebrow. "You just toppled a city's tyrant. Take a week off."

"I can't." Leo walked to the window. The mountains rose in the north, and above them, faint and terrible, he could still see the shimmering numbers. Level 87. Level 93. Level 100. "Vex said something before he died. He said my death started all of this. That I was the last login before the servers burned."

"That's guilt talking. He was lying to hurt you."

"Maybe." Leo's voice was quiet. "But Maya... if I'm really connected to whatever happened that night, then there are other people out there. Other players trapped in this world. Other Devourers. Other things that eat." He turned to face her. "Vex was just one. There's something worse out there. I can feel it."

**【New Quest: Consume the World.】**
**【The Puppet Lord spoke of a master — a being that taught him to devour. That being is still out there, growing.】**
**【Find it. Eat it. End it.**】
**【Reward: The truth about the night the world went dark.**】

Maya read the quest text over his shoulder and went very still.

"Consume the World," she said slowly. "That's not a quest, Leo. That's a war."

"Then I'll fight it." Leo picked up the Devourer's Fang and strapped it to his back. "I spent my whole life boosting other people's characters. Leveling up their accounts while mine sat at 1. I never did anything for myself."

"And now?"

"Now I'm Level 31, and there's a Level 100 out there that knows my name." Leo smiled — tired, fierce, alive. "That's a lot of levels to climb."

Maya shook her head, but she was smiling too.

"You're insane," she said.

"You've mentioned."

"I'm still coming with you."

"I know."

Outside the window, the sun was rising over the freed city. In the streets below, people were hugging, crying, laughing — a hundred thousand people waking from a nightmare.

Leo Chen, Level 1 farmer, Level 31 Devourer, walked out of the inn and into the light.

The world was big.

He was going to eat every secret it had.
